Okay, so, we've actually started work, as in actually working IN Ren'Py on the Mini-VN.
It's looking pretty simple so far, but we'll see how this goes.
In the mean time, I'm looking for artists who want to join this, at the moment very tenuous, project. For the mini-VN, all we'll really need is sprites made of the pre-existing characters, and backgrounds made of the pre-existing environments.
I've got dummy artwork set up for the scripting so I know everything's working, but man does "MIO SPRITE HERE" and "SCHOOL AUDITORIUM HERE" look pretty bad.
Converting screenshots from the game into sprites is something you should be able learn reasonably fast.
